There’s really not been too much going on lately. I haven’t been too well so when I haven’t been working or riding I’ve pretty much been laid up at home recovering.
As at today, we’re about 85 days away from our departure (off the top of my head) and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this. Actually, I do know how I feel: unprepared, despite the fact that I’m probably over-prepared. You know you’re pretty much prepared when you’re down to buying things like hand sanitiser; which is not something I’ve ever used, or felt the need to use, but the fear of falling ill (and still having to tough it out on the bike) scares me enough bring 200ml of germ killing methanol goodness along with me. If I can bathe in this, I will.
I’m currently riding what I now consider to be a lot kilometres (approx 250kms each week), but in reality will be about 2 day’s worth when we’re on the trip. I’m finding this amount of kilometres is quite easy to do- so much so, that I’ve started up having the occasional weekend cigarette (or packet thereof) as I don’t find they largely effect my fitness on bikes. Well that was until this morning. Admittedly I do find myself physically knackered by the time I make the 25km-30km commute home on a Friday afternoon, but I largely attribute that to having also worked a 40+ hour week and worn my many other hats while always battling my insomnia.
My bike for Africa is scheduled to undergo a last couple of touches soon with the additional of a dynamo-powered front light and possible wheel rebuild with brass nipples instead of the current flimsy and fragile alloy nipples. I also plan to add mud guards if a certain online bike store decides to rectify their mistake and send me the correct mudguards that I originally asked for.
I’m sure activity on the site will pick up in the coming months. This really is the head-down-and-focus part of 2011.
We’re currently planning a 2-3 day “training ride” later this morning where, for the first time, we’ll get the chance to ride together and test out all of our gear. Updates will follow.
